表现主义艺术家强调表现内心情感，不拘于写实的表现，通常令人感到恐惧和不安。
表现主义刚出现时，由于过于大胆、前卫，一时间难以被大众接受；随着工业社会的发展，现代人的精神危机越来越严重，人们才逐渐接受了表现主义。
2011年，MoMA举办了一场德国表现主义专题展（German Expressionism:The Graphic Impulse），展出了约30位表现主义艺术家的近250件作品。
